LinkLiving volunteers raise £270 for Syrian charity
Three LinkLiving volunteers were recognised for their hard work following a fundraising event at Link’s head office on Friday 18 August, which raised £270 for displaced Syrians.
The Hand in Hand for Syria fundraiser was initially organised by Step On volunteers John and Steph, who were working towards completing the final unit of their SQA Personal Development Awards.
To gain an in-depth understanding of the conflict in Syria, John and Steph interviewed Yaman, an Arabic translator and Peer Worker from LinkLiving’s Integration Hub course. Yaman’s personal experience inspired John and Steph to focus their fundraising event on raising awareness of Syrian culture.
All three volunteers then worked together to gather fundraising materials, prepare and cost a food menu, create a Syrian playlist and produce event posters for Link’s head office. The event was a great success; Link staff enjoyed some homemade Syrian cuisine cooked by Yaman, while they learned more about Syrian refugees and their journeys.
Sarah Smith, Director of LinkLiving commended the volunteers on a successful fundraiser and congratulated John and Steph on receiving their SQA Personal Development Awards, before presenting Yaman with a Saltire Award for completing over 100 hours of volunteering with Link.
