Our programme, Steps To Resilience, changes the lives of young people every single day.
Steps To Resilience is an award-winning personal development programme. It supports young people who have experienced trauma such as adverse childhood experiences as well as disadvantage and social exclusion. This includes those aged 14-16 who are struggling to attend school and those aged 16-25 years.
These experiences often result in low self-esteem and confidence, poor mental health and a pattern of destructive behaviours. Because of this these young people find it difficult to manage key transitions such as moving into work or training, into a tenancy or leaving care.
Steps To Resilience supports young people by giving them the tools to better manage their own mental health. Doing so helps them break negative and destructive cycles of behaviour and thinking, with the aim of putting them on the path to having the best life possible.
And what a difference it can make...but, don't take our word for it, take theirs...
So, what is Steps To Resilience and how does it work?
Young people are supported across 16 weeks. The programme, which includes both group work and 1:1 support, features a series of interactive workshops delivered over nine weeks, with a three day residential in week 10 to practise their new skills, as well as pre and post programme support. We are also running a remote version online during the pandemic.
Steps To Resilience helps young people to:
- Recognise, understand and manage challenges
- Develop positive behaviour
- Identify and work towards ambitions
- Increase confidence and self-esteem
- Have better physical, mental and emotional health
We use techniques that young people can identify with such as using technology to mirror real-life situations which may trigger fear or anxiety then supporting participants to practice techniques to better manage these emotions.
How can I get support?
This programme is designed for young people aged 14-16 who find it difficult to attend school and 16-25 years olds who aren't in a positive destination– both groups of which have been negatively impacted by trauma and disadvantage. We are currently taking referrals to the programme from anyone across Fife, Forth Valley, and Edinburgh such as:
- Parents or carers
- Young people themselves
- Charities, local authorities, and other support organisations

Report on the schools programme
After delivering Steps To Resilience programmes for 16-25 year olds for three years we adapted the programme to meet the needs of 14-16 year olds who were finding it difficult to attend school. A report on the first pilot programme was produced by independent youth work consultancy, Catch the Light.
